For the microarray experiment, 12-week-old male mice on a C57BL/6 background were orchidectomized (orx) and then treated for five weeks with dihydrotestosterone (DHT) (45 ﾵg/day), estradiol (E2) (0.05 ﾵg/day) or vehicle administered via subcutaneous silastic implants (Silclear Tubing; Degania Silicone, Ltd., Jordan Valley, Israel) in the cervical region. After that, the mice were killed, m. quadriceps were dissected and their wet weights determined before snap freezing in liquid nitrogen.
